Die reiche Geschichte des Kaffeeanbaus in Äthiopien

The rich history of coffee cultivation in Ethiopia

The Horn of Africa, particularly Ethiopia, is recognized as the original home of coffee. This ancient land is not only home to some of the best coffee beans in the world, but also the place where coffee culture began.

Legend of Kaldi

The most famous legend is that of Kaldi, a goatherd who lived long before the history of Ethiopia was recorded in written form. He noticed that his goats danced energetically after eating red berries from a certain tree. Curious, he tasted the berries and soon felt their invigorating effect. These berries belonged to a previously unknown tree, which was soon identified as the coffee tree.

Diversity and growing regions

Ethiopia's coffee regions are world famous. From Sidamo to Harrar to Yirgacheffe, these regions span a range of altitudes and climates. The soils are rich and volcanic, contributing to some of the most unique flavor profiles available. Some Ethiopian coffees are known for their floral and citrus notes, while others have deep berry and wine tones.

Traditional coffee ceremony

In Ethiopia, coffee is more than just a drink; it is a central social ritual. The traditional coffee ceremony is an hours-long ritual that is both a sign of hospitality and a time of togetherness and community. Freshly roasted beans are roasted over a flame, ground and brewed in a special pot called a "jebena."

Historical context

Coffee was not only valued as an everyday beverage in Ethiopia. It also played an important role in religious ceremonies and was often a symbol of status and wealth. It is said that coffee was used by Ethiopian monks to keep themselves awake during long periods of prayer.
