  • Mounting height:1758 masl
  • Harvest:2021/22

Kenya Berco is located in Nyeri, in central Kenya. The farm is family owned. The owners are Theo Mwangi, who is 92 years old, and his wife Esther Kabuari Mwangi. Their son David Kamau Mwangi is the most ambitious of his nine siblings to take over the farm.

Theo started growing coffee in 1965. He bought the land and the coffee plants from departing English settlers. He took out a loan and paid it off over 10 years.

Today, Theo is proud that all of his children have “become something” and that he was able to pay for their schooling and university education with the income from the coffee farm. A success story that we wish all coffee farmers could have.

particularities

Central Kenya is the hotspot for coffee in Kenya. What makes Kenya Berco special is the variety. Only the SL-28/34 variety is grown there. Some of the trees are 70 years old. The older the coffee tree, the more cherries it bears. Many farmers in western Kenya normally pick between 2.5 and 5 kilos per tree. But Theo sometimes picks up to 40 kilos per tree.

Key Achievements

  • 2021: First contact through son David in Nairobi.
  • 2022: Visit to the farm in Nyeri. Wertkaffe became a partner for Berco's direct sales. The entire 2021/22 harvest was purchased.
